The Papara Pro Junior and the Vahine Pro Junior finalized the Round of 16 in clean 3-foot conditions. Competition also got underway for the highly anticipated Papara Surf Festival 1,000-point Qualification Series (QS) event with a field of 64 surfers.
Competing in both the Pro Junior and QS1000 events, young Australian surfer Luke Hynd (AUS) posted the second highest heat total in the QS1000 with a 15.75.
"It's perfect lefts and rights, it's like the best day ever at your local beachie with only four guys out," Hynd said. "It's the most contestable wave I've ever surfed. It's such a bonus having the Junior and QS in the same week. If you do bad in one, you've got the other one to fix your mistakes. I'm not feeling any pressure in the QS because I'm mainly focussing on the junior."
One of Tahiti's most popular surfers, Hira Teriinatoofa (PYF) was a standout in the QS event's Round of 64. He was able to use his local knowledge and experience competing to post a solid heat total of 15.15 and move into the next round.
"I'm stoked because I live here and that gives me an advantage," Terriinatoofa said. "I've been training for prawn paddling. That's why I've been having a lot more fun surfing now, because I've taken my mind off surfing and into training somewhere else. Now when I come back I enjoy it a lot more. It's more about having fun. "
Also impressing the Judges today were Keoni Yan (HAW) who posted the highest heat total of the day -- a 16.75 -- and Kai Hing (AUS) who scored a near-perfect 9.90 (out of a possible 10) in his heat. Both surfers moved through to Round 2.
